He was born in Apuan Bali in 1973 and is a graduate of ISI, the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Denpasar, Bali in 2001. He is one of Indonesia’s prominent young painter that is deeply rooted in the culture of Bali. His father is a puppet master as well as a sculptor, and his mother is a dancer. Made Gunawan is an artist who paints with an exceptionally versatile technique. After finishing junior high at the vocational school of wood carving in Mengwi, he continued his education at the Fine Arts High School in Denpasar, then went on to further his education at the arts institute to major in painting. While he was a student, he was never far from the art world, and continued be actively involved in traditional music and theatre-drama activities in Denpasar. In 1999, Made Gunawan had a solo exhibition in Denpasar and Jakarta in 2002. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Semarang and Canberra Australia. Most recently, his works was on display at the Beijing Biennale in 2011 and 2012.
